Chantelle FreitasTell us about yourself!

Hello! My name is Chantelle Freitas (she/they) and I am currently working as the Program Coordinator for the School of Library and Information Studies in the Faculty of Education. I have nearly a decade of experience working in public libraries, and am passionate about equitable access to information and libraries as third places.

What did you do prior to working at the School of Library and Information Studies?

Prior to joining the School, I worked at the Strathcona County Library while completing a BA in sociology at the ÒÁÈËÖ±²¥. During my time at SCL, I worked in various roles ranging from customer service, community outreach, youth programming, and circulation. This valuable experience eventually led me to joining SLIS!

Tell us about your role at SLIS.

As Program Coordinator at SLIS, I am the primary administrative contact for the School. My responsibilities include governance administration, accreditation support, monitoring internal email accounts and mailing lists, updating the School’s website, event planning and coordination, and executive assistance to the SLIS Director.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

My favourite part of this job is that I get to travel to library conferences across Canada to represent the School, engage with alumni, and recruit new students. While travelling for work can be stressful, I love getting to meet some of the School’s alumni, connecting with prospective students, and learning more about the amazing work being done in the field. Library people are cool!

What’s your favourite place on campus and why?

I like to go on walks around campus during the lunch hour to stretch my legs and get some fresh air. There are so many green spaces on campus and I feel so fortunate to work in such a beautiful environment. I especially love the garden around Rutherford House, the fountains in the Education courtyard and outside the Humanities building, and the lilac bushes and climbing vines around Main Quad.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Baking, tending to my growing houseplant collection, exploring the trails of Mill Creek Ravine, and playing with my cats, Poe and Calla.
