Katrina Kern knew early on that she wanted a career where she could support others and create meaningful change. Through the dental hygiene program, she found the perfect path, combining clinical care, advocacy and community service.
What are you most proud of from your time in the program?
The moment I am most proud of during my time in the program is the opportunity to participate as a student lead for Access for All, an initiative that delivers free dental and dental hygiene services to rural and Métis communities. In many underserved areas, access to basic dental services is limited or nonexistent, and I witnessed firsthand how this lack of care can impact not only oral health but overall well-being and self-esteem. What made the experience truly rewarding was the opportunity to make an immediate, tangible difference in people’s lives. Simple procedures such as cleanings or even just providing education about oral hygiene had a profound impact on individuals who had gone years without any dental care. Their gratitude was deeply moving and their stories reminded me of the privilege and responsibility that comes with my profession. Finally, the experience brought a sense of connection and community, which enhanced my knowledge of Métis people, their traditions and values.
What advice would you give to students thinking of entering this program?
My advice to prospective students would be to get involved! Some of my most valuable or rewarding experiences came through volunteering, attending conferences and seminars and taking advantage of networking opportunities. Building personal connections and experiences goes a long way.
What comes next for you?
One of my key goals for the future is to continue expanding my passion for advocating for and serving underserved communities, both locally and internationally. I hope to contribute to sustainable solutions that can have a lasting impact. This includes learning more about the unique needs and challenges of diverse populations and finding ways to promote equity and access to resources, no matter where I am. Ultimately, I want to be part of a movement that helps create a more inclusive and supportive world for those who are often left behind.
