Have You Met Vanessa Grabia?

Meet Vanessa Grabia, Director of the CSSH Office of Education.

Vanessa Grabia

What is your first 伊人直播 memory?

I have a couple of very early memories from when I would have been maybe three or four. When I was little my dad worked on the Canadian Encyclopedia. Their original offices were in an old house right by North Campus and I remember coming here often to visit him. Also around that same age I did an exercise program for little kids — I remember it being in the basement of the Education South building and there was a game called the “Corduroy Road” where the parents all laid down on the floor side-by-side, and the kids would roll over them. It was the early 80s, hence the “corduroy” part of the road was quite literal. My mom met another mom in that class and they are still friends more than 40 years later!

What’s something your coworkers don’t know about you?

When I travel, my favourite thing to do is to find local yarn shops — they are a fascinating reflection of their respective areas.

What’s your favourite distraction?

Stitching — I knit and crochet constantly.

If you were enrolling in one course, program or degree right now, what would it be?

I would love to enroll in a degree in Media and Technology Studies in the Faculty of Arts. If ever there was a time for studying and better understanding the media landscape and the effects it has on our lives, we are living in it.

You can invite anyone — alive or dead, real or fictional — to dinner. Who would it be?

I’ve always wanted to meet Gene Kelly. I’d love to hear everything about his career and experiences filming movies like Singin’ in the Rain.

If you could see any live performance tomorrow, what would it be?

I’d be sitting on the floor in Preservation Hall in New Orleans, listening to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.

What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?

Chill out, it’ll be okay! I was very anxious at 18 — starting university (here) and really really worried about being able to get a job when I graduated. Thankfully it didn’t take away from my experiences as a student, but I definitely worried a lot more than I needed to.

What’s one thing you can’t live without?

My phone… though I should probably try to live without it once in a while.

What three words describe your 伊人直播 experience?

Life-long, personal, expansive.

Do you have any upcoming projects or initiatives you are looking forward to at work?

This fall term our office kicked off the first cohort of Teaching Squares for instructors in CSSH and I’m really looking forward to learning about their experiences and getting ready for the second cohort of folks in winter term!
