Course Delivery Formats
Instruction Modes
The instruction mode for a course indicates how a course will be taught.
In-Person
All instruction takes place in person. Instruction may be supported by digital resources, but students are expected to attend in-person classes.
Hybrid
Hybrid courses are delivered through a combination of in-person and online instructional methods. Participation in both components is required. In-person activities may include lectures, discussions, assignments, exams, and/or other structured learning experiences.
HyFlex
Hyflex courses are delivered in a format that allows students to participate either in person or online. Students may choose their mode of attendance and may switch between in-person and online participation as desired.
Online
Synchronous
All course content is delivered online with scheduled virtual live sessions, including instruction and all assessments. Online synchronous learning happens in real-time. Instructors and students log into the course simultaneously on a set class schedule. There may be graded and/or non-graded learning activities within the virtual live sessions.
Asynchronous
All course content is delivered online, including instruction and all assessments. Students move through the course material and activities at the same pace as the rest of the class. Instructors and students are not required to log into a course simultaneously and there are no scheduled live virtual sessions. There may be optional virtual sessions; however, there is no mandatory expectation for students to attend - these would be optional.
Bichronous
All course content is delivered online, including instruction and all assessments. Students engage in both asynchronous and synchronous learning, with course material and activities scheduled at the same pace as the rest of the class, along with scheduled virtual live sessions throughout the course.
Self-Paced Asynchronous
A flexible online learning experience allowing students to work through course materials and activities entirely at their own pace. There may be scheduled course activities for course completion to ensure student success. There are no scheduled virtual live sessions.
