Ukraina Moderna

In 1996 CIUS played an instrumental role in establishing in Lviv, Ukraine, an interdisciplinary historical journal Ukraina Moderna. Published by a group of historians headed by the journal’s founding editor Yaroslav Hrytsak, Ukraina Moderna soon became one of the most influential scholarly publications in Ukraine. 

Since 2007 new volumes of the journal have featured special thematic sections most often dealing with little-studied and controversial topics in Ukrainian history. As such, the journal has been and continues to be one of the most important intellectual forums for leading historians of Ukraine both from Ukraine and internationally. Since 2010 Ukraina Moderna has been prepared by CIUS’s Petro Jacyk Program for the Study of Modern Ukrainian History and Society in Lviv.

In 2023, thanks to a special agreement between CIUS and the University of Toronto Press, became the first Ukrainian scholarly journal to be hosted on the prestigious . You are invited to visit and explore the wealth of knowledge about modern Ukrainian history featured there. All of the past volumes are now available on this site, while new volumes of the journal are accessible for subscribers only for the period of one year.

Ukraina Moderna academic website


The Ukraina Moderna website was initiated in April 2011 to partner with the annual Ukraina Moderna journal. It serves as a virtual forum for professional historians and researchers from other fields in the social sciences and humanities, for the presentation and discussion of topics and issues at the intersection of history, historical sciences, and current socio-political events, phenomena, and processes in Ukraine.
